The Dallas Mavericks, currently in 10th place, will face off against the 8th-place Memphis Grizzlies on Friday for the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference.
The game will tip off at 6:30 p.m. PST at FedExForum. The winner will advance to the round of 16 against the Oklahoma City Thunder, the top seed in the West.
The Grizzlies won the season series, winning three out of four matchups. The Mavericks recently pulled off a surprising 120-106 victory as 6-point underdogs against the Sacramento Kings in the 9/10 Play-In game, with the total going over 231.5.
Forward Klay Thompson led the way with 23 points, scoring 16 in a dominant second quarter where Dallas outscored Sacramento 44-19.
On the other hand, the Grizzlies suffered a 121-116 loss to the Golden State Warriors in the 7/8 Play-In game on Tuesday. They covered the spread as 6.5-point underdogs, and that game also hit the over at 225.5.
Ja Morant scored 22 points but injured his ankle in the third quarter after landing on WarriorsWarriors’ player Buddy Hield’s foot during a jump shot.
Although he finished the game, Morant did not participate in Thursday’s practice and is listed as questionable for Friday.
Throughout the regular season, the Grizzlies covered the spread against the Mavericks three times, with the total hitting under in three of those games.
In their latest encounter on Sunday, Memphis won 132-97 and covered as a 1.5-point underdog, with the total going over 228.5. Both teams had rested several key players since the playoff standings were secure.
Given the circumstances, the points being offered to the Mavericks seem generous, particularly after their recent win in Sacramento.
Coach Jason Kidd demonstrated last year’s playoff savvy by capitalizing on opponents’ weaknesses, and the Grizzlies possess a few vulnerabilities.
They have allowed 117 points or more in 17 of their last 29 games, resulting in a dismal 6-22-1 record against the spread in that timeframe.
