The Athletics stayed close for seven innings Sunday. Then the game fell apart.
San Francisco scored eight runs in the eighth inning, and the A’s lost 10-1 to the Giants at Sutter Health Park. The loss dropped the Athletics to 23-23 and gave San Francisco the series, two games to one.
Springs kept it close
Jeffrey Springs gave the A’s a chance.
He allowed two runs, one earned, over six innings. He gave up five hits, walked one and struck out three, but he took the loss and fell to 3-4.
Luis Arraez opened the scoring with a solo homer in the third. Then Matt Chapman doubled in a run in the fourth after an A’s error and a balk helped extend the inning.
Only one answer
The A’s had little going against Adrian Houser.
Nick Kurtz walked in the first, third and fifth, extending his on-base streak to 40 games. However, the offense could not turn those chances into a bigger inning.
Darell Hernaiz singled in the fifth, and Kurtz walked again. Then Carlos Cortes dropped an RBI double into shallow right to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Eighth-inning collapse
Justin Sterner worked a clean seventh, but the eighth got away fast.
Luis Medina opened the inning and faced five batters without recording an out. The Giants loaded the bases, Rafael Devers drove in two with a single, and Willy Adames followed with another single.
José Suarez entered, but the inning kept sliding. Daniel Susac drove in a run with a groundout, Jung Hoo Lee added an RBI single, and Harrison Bader capped it with a grand slam to right.
By the time the inning ended, the Giants led 10-1.
Numbers that mattered
The Giants finished with 12 hits, while the A’s had five.
Cortes went 2-for-4 with the A’s only RBI. Kurtz walked three times, and Zack Gelof added a hit and a stolen base.
The A’s also committed three errors. Still, Carlos Cortes gave the bullpen a brief break with a scoreless ninth inning on the mound.
Up next
The Athletics open a road series Monday night against the Angels in Anaheim.
J.T. Ginn is scheduled to start for the A’s. He enters 2-1 with a 3.12 ERA and 34 strikeouts. The Angels are set to counter with José Ureña, who is 1-4 with a 3.29 ERA and 26 strikeouts.
