Las Vegas Lights FC opened the 2026 USL Championship season with a 1-1 draw Saturday night at Orange County SC, erasing an early deficit with a late equalizer in Irvine, California. The Lights controlled long stretches and finally turned that pressure into a point in the closing minutes.
Early blemish, steady response
Orange County struck first when Lyam Mackinnon finished in the 22nd minute to put the hosts up 1-0. From there, Las Vegas settled, kept its shape and started to tilt the field with possession instead of panic.
The Lights ended the night with 57.6% possession and a 3-1 edge in shots on goal, which told the story of who carried the game. Still, Orange County’s back line and goalkeeper kept Las Vegas searching for the clean final ball for most of the night.
Chances, corners, and a growing sense it was coming
Las Vegas generated six total shots and won four corners, which kept Orange County defending deeper than it wanted. However, the Lights did not cash in until late, even with a steady diet of second balls and recycling play in the attacking third.
Orange County did not create much after the opener, managing just one shot on goal. That mattered because it let Las Vegas keep committing numbers forward without getting stretched into a track meet.
The sub that changed the script
Then the match flipped in the final stretch. Nighte Pickering came off the bench and scored the equalizer in the 84th minute, finishing a move the Lights had been trying to build all night.
Las Vegas got rewarded for sticking with the possession plan instead of forcing hero balls. The Lights found the moment they needed and got out with a point.
Clean enough on the road
The Lights also kept their discipline after an early yellow to Carson Locker in the 34th minute. Both teams finished without a red card, and Las Vegas saw out the final minutes without giving Orange County a late surge.
It is only one match, but it is a useful baseline. Las Vegas had more control, more shots on frame and a real response after conceding first, and that is a better starting point than chasing games from opening night.
