Speaking to The Ring after watching the fight from ringside, Hamzah Sheeraz made it clear he welcomes the new challenge.
“I could still fight Canelo,” Sheeraz said, “but I’d just like a shot at the titles, no matter who has got them. If Crawford has them, if he stays at the weight, then I’ll fight him. But if he vacates then I’m mandatory with the WBC. I just want a crack at the titles.”
Mandatory Status Adds Leverage
Sheeraz holds mandatory status with the WBC, which means that regardless of Crawford’s decision whether he stays at super middleweight or vacates to return to welterweight or junior middleweight Sheeraz’s shot at a world title appears imminent.
What’s Next
If Crawford chooses to defend his new crown at 168 pounds, a showdown with Sheeraz could be one of the first tests of his reign. If not, Sheeraz may instead fight for a vacant belt as part of the sanctioning body’s rotation. Either way, the undefeated Brit is positioned to play a major role in the next chapter of the super middleweight division.
