Lamont Roach Jr. Remains In Limbo As Rematch Is In Jeopardy

Lamont Roach Jr. has been training for his anticipated rematch against Gervonta Tank-Davis. But with Tank-Davis recently getting arrested, that has put that fight in serious jeopardy. This rematch was supposed to show who indeed was the true champion between these two star fighters in the lightweight division.

I believe in their first fight, Roach Jr. actually defeated Tank Davis. But clearly, he was the victim of an unfavorable judge’s scorecards. We are now almost two weeks outside of the scheduled date of the August 16th rematch. But as a few developments have been shared, the fight has not even been signed from Tank Davis’ side.

With all the recent drama of Tank possibly retiring, the fight still not being signed, what does Lamont Roach Jr. do at this point? Obviously, we know that he really wants the rematch with Tank, but if it’s not possible right now, and he wants to stay active, what is next for him and who should he fight instead?

If not Tank, then who?

The next biggest name for him to fight will be Shakur Stevenson for his WBC lightweight title. That will be a very tactical fight, and a fight that the public will actually like to see. That should be on the top of Roach Jr.’s list. Stevenson currently does not have an opponent lined up after he just recently had a very strong performance against William Zepeda. Roach Jr. wasn’t supposed to be available. But since he is, that is a fight that could sell very well.

Another fight that could sell very well for Roach Jr. would be a fight with Teofimo Lopez. Teofimo Lopez would present a very exciting fight for Roach Jr. Lopez is a very aggressive fighter that does not fight boring fights. He will come directly at Roach Jr. and that will be a very competitive fight. Something that fans would be onboard with. So that fight matchup is very intriguing to me as well. But at this point, it seems clear that Roach Jr. is waiting for all the smoke to clear around Tank Davis. Once that does happen, he will be able to move forward. But until then, it seems like he’s just weathering storm.
